Curriculum

The Contemporary Dance Program at the Amman Institute of Performing Arts (AIPA) provides rigorous training in contemporary dance technique, artistic practice, and performance development.

The curriculum is structured across three progressive levels—Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced—each increasing in technical demand, physical intensity, and artistic responsibility.

Training addresses core areas of contemporary dance practice, including contemporary technique informed by Horton modern dance principles, floor work, improvisation, partnering, choreographic practice, and performance preparation.

The program emphasizes disciplined studio practice, creative exploration, and the development of each dancer’s individual artistic voice.

Students are evaluated continuously through studio practice, faculty assessment, and end-of-semester presentations.

  • Level 1: Foundation Program

    • Introduction to Contemporary Dance

Focuses on spatial awareness, posture, alignment, breath integration, and foundational movement principles drawn from Horton modern dance technique.

    • Fundamentals

Development of basic movement techniques and floor work, emphasizing coordination, weight distribution, and movement dynamics.

    • Movement Exploration

Guided improvisation developing creativity, body awareness, and individual expression through imagery, spatial exploration, and movement prompts.

  • Level 2: Intermediate Program

    •  Intermediate Contemporary Technique

Development of contemporary technique through more complex movement phrases, focusing on weight, momentum, fluidity, advanced floor work, and body isolations.

    • Composition & Structure

Introduction to choreographic tools and phrase development through movement exploration and studio practice, focusing on how movement is created, organized, and developed within a choreographic structure.

    • Partnering and Contact Improvisation

Exploration of movement in physical dialogue with a partner through weight sharing, balance, and points of contact. Students practice responding to a partner’s movement while navigating lifts, support, and momentum.

  • Level 3: Advanced Program

    • Acrobatic Contemporary

Advanced contemporary training integrating acrobatic elements, dynamic movement pathways, and expanded physical range.

    • Advanced Contemporary Repertoire

Rehearsal and performance of complex contemporary movement sequences, focusing on interpretation, musicality, and stage presence while engaging with the work of influential choreographers.

    • Composition & Choreography

Advanced choreographic practice focused on the creation, development, and refinement of original work, guiding students in shaping their own choreographic landscapes and preparing work for performance.

Training Commitment

Consistent attendance, focus, and commitment to the training process are essential to support each dancer’s development.

Students attend two classes per week, each class lasting two hours. Class schedules are assigned according to level. Classes are typically held between Saturday and Wednesday.

The training year is organized across three terms. While each level is typically structured within this cycle, progression is based on individual development and readiness.

As a result, some students may require additional time within a level before advancing.

Students will be grouped by age:

  • 8 - 15
  • 16+

Placement within levels is determined by age, experience, and faculty evaluation.
